Wildlife Safari Plans Family Friendly Fall Festival Winston, Oregon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
10/06/2016
Wildlife Safari Plans Family Friendly Fall Festival
Winston, Oregon

For ten years, Wildlife Safari in Winston has been providing families and children in Douglas County and from around the state a safe and “less-scary” alternative to typical Halloween celebrations in the form of the Wildlife Safari Harvest Zoobilee.

“And this year will be no exception,” says Jacob Schlueter, the Safari’s marketing director, “before we even hit October, we had businesses and community organizations breaking down the gates for a chance to provide games, activities, face painting and candy & other treats to trick-or-treaters for that special night.”

Officials said that providing a safe, boo-less and fun night for children and families in the form of events like the Harvest Zoobilee is the fabric of what makes Wildlife Safari so special.

“So many events around Halloween time are so scary” explains Dan Van Slyke, executive director for the Wildlife Safari, “what we want to create is a totally distinctive experience for the little ones. We offer a safe, fun and less-scary place for families and little ones and that makes our events totally unique.”

This year’s Wildlife Safari Harvest Zoobilee will be held on October 29th from 5:00-8:00pm. The price of admission is just $5 or $4 with a canned food donation to support the good work of the Salvation Army. Additional activities will be available for a fee based on family’s interests, but games, activities, crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and coffee are all included.

Wildlife Safari Harvest Zoobilee is presented through the generosity of community partners including Banner Bank, Cascade Community Credit Union, Hometown Drug and Lauren Young Tire Centers Les Schwab. Community businesses and organizations are encouraged to reach out to events@wildlifesafari.net if they are interested in participating in this evening of great family fun or if they would like to provide candy or treats.

Wildlife Safari Celebrates Success in Saving Big Cats & Welcomes Global Wildlife Conservation to Southern Oregon

Wildlife Safari Celebrates Success in Saving Big Cats & Welcomes Global Wildlife Conservation to Southern Oregon
Winston, Oregon

In 1972, the Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon opened to the public. Shortly after the park’s grand opening, a cheetah breeding program was established and settled into the picturesque hills of Southern Oregon. Since the program began, Wildlife Safari has celebrated milestones and biological achievement among not only cheetahs, but with all of the big cats that call the park home.  Since the inception of the cheetah breeding program at Safari, the park has blossomed into the most successful cheetah breeding facility outside of Africa and the number two facility on Earth, second only to The Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre in De Wildt, South Africa.

On the afternoon of August 28, 2016, sometime between 1:20 & 3:35pm, Wildlife Safari welcomed its 200th cheetah, along with a total litter of four cubs, to the world. In support of their mission to conserve and save big cat species, Safari auctioned off the naming rights to the litter of 4 at the September 9th annual Ladies Auxiliary of Wildlife Safari auction, an event which raised the park well over its $150,000 goal, grossing almost $200,000 before expenses.

“Moonfire is a very healthy 9 year old Cheetah and she's being a wonderful mom, taking excellent care of her cubbies,” Benji Alcantar, MVZ, the park’s head veterinarian said, “very attentive of their needs. The cubbies where born on Sunday August 28th, all weigh in at between 2 and just over 3 pounds, 2 girls and 2 boys, all very active and developing very quickly. They are healthy, happy and fat little cubbies.”

The exclusive rights to the names of the litter of cheetahs containing number 200 were auctioned off to members of the community that have been long-time supporters of the park including David & Kelley Trinchero who named their cub David, Lauren & Dena Young who selected the name Clark II, Dr. Stewart & Sharon Wilson who chose the name Rebel and Allyn & Cheryl Ford who named their cub Jezebel. Dr. Stewart & Sharon Wilson are also known to have named the mother of the current litter, Moonfire.

The funds raised from the naming rights of the new cheetahs will support this year’s selected Ladies Auxiliary project, to build an expansion to the existing tiger habitat known as the Tiger Oasis, and to increase veterinary access to the pair of tigers living at the Safari park.

But the big cat conservation doesn’t stop with a new tiger habitat and 200 cheetahs. Safari is expecting another cheetah litter by the end of September and will use the expanded tiger habitat to launch a new breeding program- to increase the population and genetic viability of critically endangered Sumatran tigers. That’s right; Wildlife Safari is planning to have tiger cubs in Southern Oregon.

“So, currently, Wildlife Safari is the biggest, most well known cheetah breeding center in the country, and second in the world,” explained Sarah Roy, who has been supervising the carnivore program since 2008, “We also house some of the most genetically valuable lions for the lion breeding programs in the country and we are looking to extend that into tigers.”

Sumatran tigers are critically endangered with fewer than 500 left in the wild. Wildlife Safari is hoping they can flex some of their incredible successes in big cat breeding to help turn the tide for the Sumatran tiger.

“Sumatran tigers are the most endangered of all the tiger sub-species,” Roy continued, “and we have the perfect space and environment here to have a successful tiger breeding program as well.”

Wildlife Safari plans to begin construction on the new Tiger Oasis as soon as contracts are secure and weather permits.

On Monday, October 10 at 3:00, Wildlife Safari will host Rebecca Klein, one of three founders of Cheetah Conservation Botswana and an expert in human-wildlife conflict.

“We’re excited to provide the public with an opportunity to meet with Klein, who is working to support cheetahs in Botswana, the nation with the second largest population of wild cheetahs,” Roy explained. Reminding that “Wildlife Safari provides an interesting parallel to the second highest population of wild cheetah with our second most successful captive breeding program.”

Pancake the cheetah and her dog companion Dayo at Wildlife Safari are meant to highlight the increasingly important relationship between wild cheetahs and ‘Livestock Guard Dogs’ in Africa.

According to Roy, “cheetahs are a flight animal, meaning their instinct when they are in danger is to run, not to fight. So in Africa, dogs are raised alongside livestock and they chase the cheetahs off, rather than farmers having to protect their livestock from the cats using other methods, including killing the wild cheetahs.”

Cheetah Conservation Botswana is also committed to combating the decline of wild cheetah populations and their work to train farmers and raise these specially trained dogs has seen a steep decline in the number of cheetahs killed to protect livestock. CCB also runs a long list of other conservation projects from tracking the cats with ‘crittercams’ to see what their daily lives entail to educating the public on human-wildlife conflict.

The global wildlife conservation efforts at Wildlife Safari go even further than big cats.

“Each year the Wildlife Safari Conservation Committee sends over $18,000 to various conservation projects all over the world,” explains Leila Goulet, Safari’s education director and the head of the conservation committee, “aside from Safari’s mission to educate our local and visiting public, we are also committed to wildlife conservation on a global level.”

According to Safari staff, one dollar from every close encounter sold at Wildlife Safari makes up the fund that is distributed to various organizations each year. The Wildlife Safari Conservation Committee supports two permanent projects- Cheetah Conservation Botswana and the International Elephant Foundation- and one rotating project. This year’s selected rotating project is Proyecto Titi, helping to protect the cotton topped tamarin in Colombia.

Though tickets are free, Safari advises visiting their facebook page and reserving your seats to the talk to guarantee your space.

Re-Release Note/ Corrections: A previous release of this news contained the incorrect statement that Dr. Stewart and Sharon Wilson raised Moonfire, the mother cheetah. Wildlife Safari regrets this error as the statement above, that Dr. Stewart and Sharon Wilson named Moonfire, is correct.

WINSTON COLOR SPASH 5K COMING

Winston, Oregon – Winston will host a 5K color run/walk, on Saturday, October 8. The paint race will be an exciting community celebration. Registration for the event is now open.
With no winners or official times, Winston Color Splash 5K celebrates healthiness, happiness, and individuality, bringing the community together to create a five-kilometer canvas of colorful fun in which participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. Last year the event’s predecessor Color Us United run/walk used chalk to color its participants. This year, water colors will be used to splash on white shirted runners and walkers.
Co-promoters of the event are Pacific Fitness of Winston and South River Community Health Center. Many area businesses and organizations are also helping to sponsor the event.
Participants may sign-up at Pacific Fitness, located at 10 SW Oak Street in Winston or via the web at winstoncolorrun.com. Entry fee is $20 per person. Participants signing-up by Saturday, September 23, will receive a free race t-shirt.
Check-in for the run/walk will start at 9 a.m. at South River Community Health Center. Runners will start at 11 a.m. and walkers several minutes later. The course winds through Winston before making its way back to South River for the finish.
“Winston Color Splash 5K is a great chance to bring together friends and family in a unique, healthy, and fun environment,” said Tim Cox of Oregon Door, a second year sponsor and assistant coordinator. Event coordinators suggest wearing a darker tank top under their white shirts since it is a water event. “Be prepared to be covered in color at the finish!”
Event coordinator, Brandi Voepel of Pacific Fitness added, “This event is going to be a blast and really help celebrate our community!”

Olympic Motivation for Beating the Competition

Olympic Motivation for Beating the Competition
By: Don Cook, Express Employment Professionals
Athletes from around the globe gather to compete for top honors in their sports. Already the champions of their home countries, Olympians share a goal to become world champions in their events. They aim to take home the gold medal and secure their place in history. Competing athletes  find inspiration in those who have gone before them. You can use the lessons of past Olympians to help you on your path to beating the competition—whether it’s in your job search, on the corporate ladder or in the workplace.
Never give up.
It’s 1980, and the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, are well underway. Never regarded as a top team in the sport, the United States men’s hockey team found themselves with the odds stacked against them. Made up of amateur and collegiate players, the U.S. team was pitted against powerhouse Russia. In an unexpected, stunning display of commitment and strength, they beat the Soviet team and went on to win gold. Now recognized as the “Miracle on Ice,” the victory went down in history as an example of grit that continues to inspire today. If you’re up against incredible odds, take a lesson from Lake Placid and remember that anything is possible.
Fight through the challenges.
Gymnast Kerri Strug, a member of the historic “Magnificent Seven,” had a heroic showing at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Not only did Strug help ensure the United States’ first-ever team gold medal in Women’s Gymnastics, her second vault performance went down in history when she stuck the landing after a serious ankle injury on the previous attempt. Strug’s performance is a reminder that passion and courage can overcome even the most challenging of times.
Let nothing stand in your way.
Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton won the 1984 Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles, after taking home numerous U.S. and world championship titles. Known for his backflips and entertaining athleticism, Hamilton went on to make history in his sport. In 1997, however, Hamilton was diagnosed with cancer. With renewed perspective and goals, he continued to perform professionally until he retired four years later. In 2004, Hamilton received a brain tumor diagnosis, and yet again overcame his odds. The Olympian’s unyielding courage and strength is proof that, when you have your mind set on a goal, almost nothing can stop you from reaching it.
Accept help from other.
After his own athletes had been eliminated early in the competition, Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth still made history at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. During one of the races, Wadsworth noticed Russian Anton Gafarov struggling to complete the course. He had crashed and broken a ski, which wrapped around his foot and caused him to drag across the course. When no one, including Gafarov’s own coaches, stepped in to help, Gafarov jumped to action. He grabbed a spare ski from his Canadian team and ran onto the track, where he pulled off the broken equipment and replaced it. Gafarov was able to cross the finish line with Wadsworth’s help, a reminder that even the best of the best need a little help every now and then.
Be groundbreaking.
Still a newer sport in the Olympic Games, snowboarding has come a long way since athletes like Shaun White have taken over. A daring, stunning athlete, White shocked spectators during the 2010 Vancouver snowboarding halfpipe finals when he completed the world’s first Double McTwist 1260. The trick, which is the most difficult in the history of the sport, earned White the gold medal and instant fame. White recognized the risk and reward of being the first to accomplish a groundbreaking feat, and his Olympic run is a reminder that giving it your all can put you on top.
Go against the grain.
In 1960, barefoot running had yet to become a trend. So when Abebe Bikila, an Olympian from Ethiopia, ran the marathon in Rome without shoes, he made history. A last-minute replacement for an injured teammate, Bikila had issues with his running shoes and decided to run barefoot in the heat of the late afternoon. Not only did Bikila win the gold medal, he shattered the Olympic record and set a new world best. Bikila’s inspiring story proves that thinking outside the box, and being quick to adapt to challenges, can set you apart from the competition.
As one of the most beloved Olympians of our time, Muhammad Ali, once said, “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” If you’re trying to beat the competition and land a job, get a promotion or start a business, you may have to take risks and put it all on the line. Like the Olympic champions before you, your success will be defined by how you choose to beat the odds and reach your goals.
Remember, with courage, passion and perseverance, your definition of a gold medal can be attained.
